The Stratford Public Library began in 1926 as a PTA project. The library has been moved several times over the years, but has been in the current location since 1992. In 2016, the library purchased an adjacent building to add onto the library. A doorway was knocked out between the two buildings, and the addition officially opened to the public in August of 2017. The addition has been a wonderful resource for our community as a place for meetings, programs and classes. Stratford Public Library is fully accredited by the State of Iowa and strives to provide materials, services and programs for all age groups in the Stratford area and surrounding community.
The library has partnered with various organizations over the years to bring quality experiences to our patrons. In the past few years, some of the groups we have worked with are: Stratford Stride, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Stratford Spirit 4H Club, Legacy Learning BRV, Stratford Promotion Committee, Stratford Homeschool Assistance Group, and the Stratford Community School. In the summer of 2019 the librarians worked with a couple of 4H members to complete a display of photos in the addition featuring pictures of the veterans featured on the Hamilton County Freedom Rock wall.
The Stratford Library offers bi-monthly Lego Club and American Girl Club for the kids. Twice a year, the library places a Story on a Stick with children using a map to read story pages set up in front of local businesses on Main Street. The library also sets up a Christmas tree every year at the Athen’s Woods Retirement Home display of trees.
The library’s mission statement is: creating opportunity for all through information, advice, guidance, learning and inspiration. The library is consistently living up to this standard. They regularly bring in new books requested by patrons. They host art classes for adults that have been very popular and well-received. They participate each year in the Shop Small Saturday event to encourage and help other local businesses. The library strives to be a friendly place for anyone who comes in the door, and does their very best to help citizens find what they need.
"A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life." - Henry Ward Beecher
We couldn't agree more. Come visit your local library. A quiet place to study, relax, work or simply escape in a good book. It's fun, the old fashioned way.
